LK Top Coats Technical Data Sheet
Product Overview
LK Top Coats are premium, high-performance blends of water-based acrylic and polyurethane resins, specially formulated for leather and canvas surfaces. Designed for durability and ease of use, our top coats deliver a professional finish with excellent chemical and scratch resistance. Perfect for custom shoe designs, automotive upholstery, and artistic canvas projects, LK Top Coats ensure lasting quality and vibrant results.
Surface Preparation
- Cleaning: Gently clean the leather surface using a lint-free cotton cloth. Wipe until the surface feels tacky, indicating it is ready for painting. Avoid over-cleaning to preserve the leather's integrity.
- Drying: Allow the surface to air dry for 10–20 minutes to let solvents evaporate naturally. Do not force dry.
- Debris Removal: Use a clean, dry synthetic paintbrush to remove dust or debris before painting.
Applying Paint
- Layering: Apply paint in thin, even layers until the desired color or design is achieved. Allow each layer to dry completely before applying the next.
- Heat Setting: DO NOT HEAT SET YOUR PAINT UNLESS IT IS ON A FABRIC!
Applying LK Top Coat
- Equipment: Use an airbrush with a 0.2–0.7 mm tip size at 25–35 psi, or a mini spray gun with a tip size under 1.0 mm.
- Application: Spray the top coat from 3–5 inches away (airbrush) or 4–8 inches away (spray gun). Alternatively, you can apply top coats with a soft bristle brush as one wet coat. Apply in even, medium-wet coats, moving side to side and top to bottom, overlapping each pass for consistent coverage.
- Drying Between Coats: Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next.
Drying and Curing
- Air Drying: Allow 35–50 minutes for air drying, depending on ambient temperature and humidity.
- Force Drying: If using a hairdryer, keep the temperature below 350°F and limit drying to 10 minutes.
- Curing: LK Top Coats are ready for handling once dry, but full chemical and scratch resistance develops after 12 hours of curing at 70°F.
Pot Life and Shelf Life
- Pot Life: Once poured into an open container (e.g., airbrush or mixing cup), the product remains usable for up to 2 hours in a 1/8 oz cup or 6 hours in a 16 oz cup at 72°F. Cover unused portions to extend pot life.
- Shelf Life: Unopened bottles maintain performance for over 1 year under normal conditions. Partially used bottles show no significant performance loss when properly sealed.
Coverage
A 2 oz bottle of LK Top Coat covers more than 15 pairs of leather shoes or one large leather car seat. Coverage on canvas varies depending on the material and project size.
Storage
- Store between 50°F and 80°F, away from prolonged direct sunlight to prevent oxidation.
- Avoid long-term exposure to temperatures above 120°F or below 30°F, as this may reduce product performance.
- Keep containers tightly sealed when not in use to prevent them from drying out.
Cleanup
- Immediate Cleanup: Clean tools immediately after use with water, acetone, or LK Acrylks Reducer. Rinse airbrushes or spray guns thoroughly until the cleaner runs clear to prevent clogs.
- Dried Top Coat: Use strong solvents, such as M.E.K. or volatile paint strippers, for removing dried residue, following safety guidelines.
